Discover the museums of Valle d’Itria on the international museum day!

On May 18th the international day of museums is celebrated! A party created to show the world how museums can become places of exchange and creation!

In Valle d’Itria there are no large museums but small and varied museum proposals that we invite you to visit on the occasion of the international museum day.

The 2019 edition of the International Museum Day has the subtitle “Museums as cultural hubs: the future of tradition”. Today more than ever, museums must be spaces where visitors can create and share new experiences.

We then begin to learn about the museums that you can visit in Valle d’Itria and in neighboring towns. Let’s start with the largest and most important one: the Pino Pascali Contemporary Art Museum Foundation, in Polignano a Mare. Set up inside the space of the former Municipal Slaughterhouse overlooking the waterfront, it is the only museum of Contemporary Art that is stable in Puglia and its activity is divided as follows: temporary exhibitions, the permanent collection, The Pino Pascali Award. The Foundation is currently present at the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia with “Pino Pascali – Dall’Immagine alla Forma”, an exhibition that, fifty years after the death of the artist, proposes a new and surprising reading of his production, combining photographic research with sculptural and filmic research.

The second museum that we propose is Perle di Memoria. From the objects to the traditional gestures of Locorotondo. The interactive museum exhibition is dedicated to the enhancement of ancient crafts and traditional knowledge. The museum displays antique objects, traditional farming and artisan utensils, photographic and audiovisual evidence. Nothing immobile, the objects come to life through the most advanced techniques with sounds, videos and rooms that open when the visitor passes by. On the occasion of the international museum day, Sunday 19th May, the Perle di Memoria Museum will become a place where everyone can create, share and have fun! A double date is in fact planned: the day begins – at 10.30 am – with an English conversation meeting to discover the museum’s exhibition itinerary, a small aperitif will be offered at the end of the meeting. The afternoon continues with an artistic experimentation laboratory: you will be able to experiment the ancient techniques of working soft stones – such as tuff and Lecce stone – and make a small object with your hands.

From Locorotondo we move to the MAAC Museum of art and archaeological area located under the Church Matrice of Cisternino. This museum represents a particular experiment of dialogue between ancient and contemporary: the medieval archaeological excavations that host the contemporary works create an original scenography that influences the vision of the whole.

On the occasion of the international museum day, Saturday 18th May, it will be possible to visit the museum at a reduced price: 2 euros per person.

We continue our cultural tour and from Cisternino we go to Ceglie Messapica to visit the MAAC Archaeological and Contemporary Art Museum. The Museum consists of two exhibition levels, the first, located on the ground floor, preserves the finds from the Messapian burials of the territory. On the upper floor, connected to the ground floor by a very interesting Art Time-Line Gallery, is the Museum of Contemporary Art, which houses the works participating in the Emilio Notte Award born in 2011.

On the occasion of the international museum day, the Maac organises for Saturday, May 18, an afternoon of games and knowledge. At 5 pm, in fact, the “Taboo Culturale” game will be launched, created by SwapMuseum volunteers, followed by “Gusta il Museo”, a guided tour of the museum accompanied by a tasting of typical local products.

Finally, in our opinion, you should not miss a visit to the Civic Museum and Archaeological Park of Ostuni. The Archaeological Museum is located in the former Carmelite monastery of Santa Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi and in the annexed Church of San Vito Martire, where there are exhibits from the Messapian, Medieval and Modern ages. The visit to the Museum is accompanied by the one at the Archaeological Park, in the cave of Agnano, located about two kilometres from the town of Ostuni.

And now all that remains is to organize yourself to make a wonderful imaginary journey through art, history and fantasy.
