Alberobello

Alberobello, “the capital of the trulli” par excellence thanks to the precious Unesco recognition obtained in 1996

A unique historical center of its kind, in fact, although the trulli are present in all the municipalities of the Valle d’Itria, Alberobello represents the only urban agglomeration of trulli. This peculiarity has created over the centuries a unique panorama in the world, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. A recognition given to the perfect harmony and historical identity of this territory that make it so special.

Our advice is to start your discovery itinerary from the Belvedere Santa Lucia which will allow you to have a complete view of Rione Monti from above, an expanse of more than 1000 trulli, perched in a maze of winding alleys. Do not be discouraged by the climb and walks aimlessly through its narrow streets, flanked on both sides by trulli. Despite the massive presence of souvenir shops, created inside most of the trulli, you will feel like you are crossing a magical landscape, thanks also to the numerous esoteric symbols present on the cones of the trulli, such as hearts, crosses and esoteric symbols. In the Rione Monti do not miss the Church of Sant’Antonio, an imposing building in the shape of a trullo, the “Trulli Siamesi”, so called for the singular joint roof, and the Casa D’Amore, the first house built in lime, a material then prohibited, as the inscription on the façade also reports: “By direct resolution this house was the first to be built with lime”.

Crossing Largo Martellotta you will find yourself in the Aia Piccola district, where you will be surprised by a completely different, more authentic atmosphere, a small medieval village with about 400 trulli, capable of expressing all the charm of the ancient comings and goings and meetings in the square.

A last indispensable stop is the Trullo Sovrano, the only trullo with a raised floor, reachable by a masonry staircase, which has now become a museum house and can be visited every day.

Alberobello, like all the villages in the Valle d’Itria, is surrounded by a spectacular countryside that we recommend to cross by car or by bicycle for the more trained. There are many paths that unravel between olive trees, trulli and dry stone walls to connect the capital of the trulli to the other villages.
