Fasano

Fasano, a city surrounded by the colors of the earth, the colors of the sea and important archaeological excavations

The city of Fasano is a seaside town well known for the presence of the zoosafari, but Fasano is not just a zoo on the contrary.

The center of Fasano is characterized by narrow streets and small squares surrounded by houses plastered with lime. In the heart of the historic village you can admire the late Renaissance architecture of the Mother Church, dating back to the 17th century and dedicated to St. John the Baptist, and the Baroque Church of Purgatory.

To better understand the identity of this place, we recommend two hamlets that are somewhat antithetical but equally characteristic: Selva di Fasano, located on a hill and full of buildings, and Savelletri, a small seaside village famous for its sea urchins.

Let’s start, therefore, with a nice walk on the Selva di Fasano. Up there, you will not only discover the trullo church of Maria SS. Addolorata that will make you doubt that you are in Alberobello, but glimpses of a wide valley with lots of sea will open up in front of you. It is said that when the sky is clear of clouds, from here you can even glimpse the coasts of neighboring Albania.

Do not miss the Minaret Tower, a completely unexpected Arabian construction in such a context, which represents the eclectic and dreamy spirit of its ancient owner. Unfortunately, it can only be visited from the outside as it needs renovation and safety measures, however given its uniqueness it is certainly worth a visit.

From the forest of Fasano to Savelletri the step is short. It takes just five to ten minutes by car for the surrounding landscape to completely transform. If at the Selva the dominant color is green, in Savelletri one is welcomed by all the shades of blue. In Savelletri one cannot fail to taste its great specialty: sea urchins.

It is a culinary pearl, a perfect gastronomic delicacy to be savored (with a piece of fresh bread) a stone’s throw from the sea, in one of the very rustic restaurants that crowd the coast, continuing towards the Forcatella district. A curiosity: sea urchins are eaten only in the months with the R (February, March, April …).
