Ostuni
Ostuni, the white city par excellence overlooking a sea of olive trees that seem to dive into the sea
A very white village that seems to slumber on the southern part of the Murgia, not far from the sea, Ostuni is a city that enchants from any side you admire it. Whether it is from below, when you are arriving or from above from the balconies of the many whitewashed houses.
Ostuni, suddenly appears, perched on three hills while traveling along the state road that connects the Itria Valley to Salento. Of all the villages in the Itria Valley it is certainly the most tiring one thanks to its climbs and infinite steps, despite this Ostuni must be toured strictly on foot or as someone does with an ape car. Our advice is to leave the car in the parking lot in via Salvatore Tommasi and from there start climbing the oldest part of the city along its narrow and characteristic whitewashed alleys.
Going up towards the historic center you will find what were once the defensive walls of the city, built during the Aragonese period. The path that runs along the walls is now a pleasant walk that will allow you to admire not only a sea of olive trees but also the Adriatic Sea. Even for Ostuni the historic center is a jewel to be explored without a specific destination.
You can start your exploration from Piazza della Libertà, where the Column of Sant’Oronzo stands in its 20.75 meters, also known as the “spire” and symbol of the city, from here you can begin to walk the climb that will lead you into the heart of the ancient village. The narrow alleys are a succession of traditional houses, shops and restaurants, a labyrinth of narrow and winding streets. Going up you arrive at the Co-Cathedral of Ostuni, and its wonderful rose window, and at the Porta di San Demetrio.
One of the things that it is impossible not to do in Ostuni is to take a photo in front of the most famous blue door in Puglia. Just past the Porta di San Demetrio and looking out on the right, you will find a lookout and next to it the beautiful blue door, with white walls and surrounded by prickly pears.
